FIRST GRADE - FALL 2016
First Grade 3-D Native American Canoes
After discussing the way that Native American tribes made canoes and painted distinguishable pictographs on the side of them, first grade made their very own! Students drew pictographs based off of examples provided and the colored them in. Transforming the flat paper into a 3-D form took focus and skill, but all students were successful! Their hard work really paid off!
First Grade Fall Leaves
During the fall, we observe some beautiful wonders of nature, like how leaves change color and FALL from the trees! First grade has been looking at different shapes and colors of leaves and drawing inspiration from them for our new project. Earlier this year, we practiced drawing with oil pastels, but today we experimented with blending and mixing colors to fill in and around our leaves. Students chose a color to mount behind their leaf and then added a decorative, patterned border out of paper. They were so proud of their bright and colorful creations!
First Grade Owls
First grade learned all about owls and talked about some distinct features among barn owls, spotted owls and great horned owls. I was amazed at what they already knew about owls! We learned how to draw our owls and then got some practice with our cutting and gluing techniques to make a branch for our owl to sit on. If you look closely you might see texture applied to the branches to look like real wood! That is a rubbing technique using a flat crayon and texture plates.
First Grade Monsters!
First Grade kicked off the year reading Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and The Monster Who Ate My Peas by Danny Schnitzlein. We talked about different kinds of ways to draw our monsters and how to fill them with lots of different patterns. After first drawing them with oil pastels, we were able to create an oil resist when we painted over the pastel with water color paints. They are so fun and so unique!
